THE SERPENTINE CATHEDRAL
Our Vermont Verde Serpentine stone fabrication facility located in Barre, Vermont employs a staff of experienced stone craftsmen who use our advanced technology and large-scale machinery to cut and finish the raw quarry blocks.
CUT DOWN TO SIZE
We can supply custom sizes and different finishes with short lead times – from small scale kitchens to major international architectural projects.
In one of the oldest stone sheds in Barre, we process our blocks into slabs, tiles and custom-shaped blocks, which are then strengthened with resin and polished to your desired finish. With everything in one place, we’re able to reduce waste, lower transportation costs and shorten turnaround times to save you both time and money, and contribute to your LEED certification.
Having our own huge facility also gives our clients the advantage of being able to select from the large inventory of serpentine slabs and blocks stored inside this 40,000 square foot building for year-round viewing.
Our equipment includes:
-
- (Three) 3.5 meter blade saws capable of cutting the green slabs to any thickness for custom jobs and unique needs
- A twelve-head line polisher, one of the few in North America, able to produce finishes such as honed, brushed and polished
- A contour wire saw for curved work and other intricate projects
- Numerous gantry bridge saws for custom cut-to-size jobs
- (Three) 3.5 meter blade saws capable of cutting the green slabs to any thickness for custom jobs and unique needs
FINISHED TO PERFECTION
The main difference between Honed, Brushed and Polished finishes is the sheen of the stone. Honed stone (left) has a matte or satin finish, giving it a smooth, non-slippery surface, while Brushed stone (center) has a textured finish that is created by the brushing of the stone with diamond-impregnated brushes. This finish has a beautiful leathered look that is classic and timeless. Polished stone (right) has a high gloss finish which is very reflective and smooth, giving it a shiny, glassy appearance. One of the qualities that makes Vermont Verde Antique® unlike any other serpentine is the ability to achieve a high gloss polish which allows you to see deep into the stone, revealing all the unique minerals under the surface.
Precision Cutting
We use three, 3.5 meter saws for cutting the enormous blocks that we pull from the quarry into slabs of any thickness, and several different types of saws to cut Verde into tiles, smaller blocks and unique or curved shapes.
Resining
Resining with epoxy strengthens Vermont Verde green stone by filling tiny fissures along the quartz veining to increase the stone’s resilience and durability. Resining also enhances the our ability to achieve more uniform polishing.
Finishing
Vermont Verde’s twelve-head line polisher, one of the few in North America, can produce finishes such as polished, honed and brushed. Each finish brings out a different depth of the green color and surface sheen in the stone.
Vermont Verde Serpentine has been a favorite of domestic and international architects, designers and fabricators for over a century.
We recently had a visit from architect Michael K Chen and his team from MKCA of NYC to view the 34 book-matched slabs of Verde that will make up a stone spandrel that is going to surround a showpiece residence they are building in Katonah, NY.
