Chittenden Block, Rutland, VT

Project Description

The spectacular wrap-around facade of the Chittenden Block in Rutland is a great example of early 20th century neo-classical architecture. The building was built to fit the sharply-angled intersection of Merchant’s Row and Central Street, creating a unique and prominent position in downtown.  The Vermont Verde Serpentine runs the full length of the block’s first floor along both routes. Since 1911, it had always housed a bank. But now, the recently-converted space hosts student artwork work throughout the year as the VTSU Castleton Bank Gallery. The Gallery is open to the public Thursday through Sunday and features exhibits of more than a dozen new artists a year, including painting, sculpture, mixed media, sound and photography displays.
